- Kontak Awal: Pelaku menghubungi korban dan bertanya apakah mereka baru saja menerima uang dari keluarga.
- Ancaman Palsu: Pelaku mengklaim bahwa uang tersebut dikirim secara ilegal atau bahwa keluarga korban sedang dalam bahaya.
- Isolasi: Korban diarahkan untuk memutuskan komunikasi dengan keluarga atas nama “penyelidikan”. Mereka sering diminta meninggalkan tempat tinggal dan menginap di hotel untuk memperkuat ilusi penculikan.
- Menakut-nakuti Keluarga: Dengan tidak adanya komunikasi, keluarga korban yakin bahwa anak mereka benar-benar telah diculik, sehingga terpaksa membayar tebusan.
Faktor Kepercayaan dan Ketakutan
Seng mencatat bahwa banyak keluarga di Tiongkok enggan melaporkan kasus ini ke polisi di negara tempat tinggal korban, seperti Amerika Serikat, karena kurangnya kepercayaan terhadap aparat hukum setempat. Media pemerintah Tiongkok sering menggambarkan polisi di negara lain sebagai pihak yang tidak bertanggung jawab, sehingga menambah keraguan para orang tua untuk mencari bantuan resmi.

Joseph Steinberg, pakar keamanan siber, menjelaskan bahwa kemajuan teknologi, termasuk kecerdasan buatan (AI), memungkinkan pelaku kejahatan untuk berkomunikasi dengan korban meski tidak berbicara bahasa yang sama.
“AI akan terus berkembang, sehingga serangan ini akan terasa semakin realistis,” ujar Steinberg.
Kasus seperti ini bukan hanya terjadi di Amerika Serikat. Di Kanada, Jepang, Inggris, dan Australia, modus serupa juga telah menargetkan pelajar Tiongkok. Penipuan ini memanfaatkan ketakutan dan kepanikan korban serta keluarganya untuk mendapatkan uang tebusan.

Untuk melindungi diri dari ancaman penculikan online, para ahli keamanan siber menyarankan beberapa langkah:
- Kata Sandi Keluarga: Buat kata sandi khusus untuk memverifikasi identitas dalam situasi darurat.
- Waspada Komunikasi Asing: Jangan mudah percaya pada panggilan atau pesan dari pihak yang mengaku sebagai pejabat pemerintah, terutama yang meminta tindakan mendadak.
